Allegheny Highlands Black History Project Family History Information Form

This online form is an opportunity for you to share any information or resources relevant to the project.

We are researching the history and experiences of Black West Virginians from the post-Civil War through the Civil Rights Era (circa 1970). Your family stories do not need to be dramatic or world-changing. We are interested in sharing the stories of what life was like for Black people in this area of West Virginia.

Examples include:

  • How did your family come to settle in this area of West Virginia?

  • What did they do for work?

  • What family traditions do you have? (Special holidays, recipes, music, gatherings, etc.)

  • What was their experience in education? Did they attend segregated schools and/or experience integration?

  • Are there any favorite family stories or tales that have been passed down?

  • What were your family members' experiences with racism and the Civil Rights Movement?

  • And anything else you'd like to share, big or small...
